More About Our Company

Thank you for visiting Black’s Farmwood!

I started Black’s Farmwood in the late 1990’s. Due to my concerns regarding global deforestation and climate change, I decided to leave a Ph.D. program in clinical psychology in San Francisco to deconstruct and repurpose my family’s barn in Ohio. The 150-year-old oak barn had recently fallen in a storm, and I asked my grandmother what she planned to do with the wood. Her response was to burn the wood and clean up the area (which was a common practice just 15 years ago). I knew I wanted to create a green company that was an alternative to clearcutting forests, so I borrowed a pickup truck and chainsaw and tore apart the antique oak barn with the help of my two grandfathers. I became enamored with the beauty of the weathered oak barn siding and the history of the hand-hewn beams. I had found my life’s work.

Black’s Farmwood has grown significantly over the years. We’ve expanded to offer all types of reclaimed wood ranging from deconstructed Douglas fir warehouses, to old growth redwood water tank wood, to urban salvaged logs. Black’s Farmwood is FSC Certified and provides FSC Certified wood flooring and lumber from well managed forests. Our customers range from residential do-it-yourselfers to large commercial clients such as Pixar, Starbucks, Sundance, and Whole Foods. You can find our reclaimed wood in gorgeous residential projects from NYC to the Bay Area. Recent commercial projects were Artesa Winery in Napa Valley, Phil Lesh’s Terrapin Crossroads in Marin County, and Autodesk’s Pier 9 LEED Platinum Project in San Francisco.

Black’s Farmwood is a family owned company and we value each and every one of our customers. Please take some time to view our website and see our work. We operate a reclaimed wood mill and yard in Northern California and we have a showroom in San Rafael, California. Our products include reclaimed wood flooring, reclaimed wood siding & barn siding, reclaimed antique hand hewn beams, live edge wood slabs, and custom reclaimed wood tables & furniture.

Please contact us to request pricing, samples, or to visit our showroom.

We’d love to work with you.

Yours Sincerely,

Michael Black, Founder
